UCO Summer Academy 2016

Our Values

We are a community of disciples on mission.

Four charisms describe our distinctive values:

Our History

University Christian Outreach (UCO) has its origins in the Charismatic Renewal movement of the late sixties in the U.S. A group of students, moved by the Holy Spirit, decided to make the most of their student years for Christ and bring the Gospel of Jesus to their fellow students. First established in Ann Arbor, at the University of Michigan, the group was originally called  the Dorm District. UCO acquired its present name in the late seventies. In the seventies and eighties, other UCOs were founded in Lansing and Pittsburgh.

Our Family

UCO is a member of Kairos North America, the youth work organization of the Sword of the Spirit. In many places, UCO is the student outreach of a local Christian Charismatic covenant community of families. Some UCOs are staffed in part by members of the Servants of the Word.

Saint Paul’s Outreach (SPO) is our sister organization based in St Paul, Minnesota.

YouthWorks-Detroit is an affiliated organisation in Detroit that runs youth programs, mission trips and outreach events in the inner city.

Clara Schwartz
Mission Leader & Administrative Assistant

Clara, a born and raised Michigander, has delighted in living and serving in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Detroit and Lansing Michigan. She was first introduced to UCO as a student at Grand Valley State University. After earning her B.B.A in Accounting, she moved to Lansing to serve on staff with UCO. She loves going on walks, jamming on the djembe, budgeting, playing ultimate frisbee and spreading the joy of the Lord. Clara acts as the Administrative Assistant for UCO.

Alex Kilpatrick
Lansing Chapter Leader

Alex is a Michigander who got involved with UCO whilst living in the dorms at the University of Michigan. After graduating with a bachelor’s in Cell & Molecular Biology, he moved up to Lansing, where he has been on staff with UCO for the past 6 years. Alex enjoys reading and playing just about any sport. He oversees the UCO chapter in Lansing, the Summer Academy and other regional events, and helps with some of the new UCO chapters in the region.

Bonnie King
Regional Supervisor

Bonnie is a Michigan native and has lived in the Lansing area all her life. She first became involved with outreach to college students when she was a student at Michigan State University.  She and her husband, Jon, have five adult children. After a number of years spent caring for her family, she came back to UCO and has been serving with us for the past 15 years. She enjoys putzing in her kitchen, spending time with family, reading, and creating things with the help of her sewing machine. Bonnie is a Regional Supervisor who oversees staff in the Lansing and Pittsburgh chapters. She also helps with the regional staff training.

David Williamson
Development Director

David Williamson loves adventure — especially the great adventure of following the Lord of the Universe. He studied Greek and Intellectual History at the University of Michigan and is currently working on a Masters of Theological Studies at Calvin Seminary. He uses his experience in life to lead the Grand Rapids Formation Program. When not working for UCO you can find him sailing, woodworking, or playing with his kids.

Andrew Davignon
Assistant Regional Director

Andrew graduated from the University of Michigan and spent several years working as a turnaround consultant. During this time he felt a call to leave his career and follow the Lord. He was led to UCO, where he is honored to serve, proclaiming the good news and preparing the way for the Lord! Andrew likes to read, is always willing to karaoke, and loves to whistle. Andrew is an Assistant Regional Director overseeing the Ann Arbor, Jackson, and Maryland chapters.

Brian Laba
Assistant Director

Brian grew up in Michigan and came to the University of Michigan in 97 where he got a degree in Resource Ecology Management (special emphasis on trees and dirt).  After being involved as a student Brian began serving on staff with UCO in 2000.  He has worked with the chapters in Ann Arbor, Belfast Northern Ireland, and Grand Rapids.  He is a member of the Servants of the Word.  He currently lives in Grand Rapids where he seeks to live out the Lord’s call to follow him and bear witness to him who is the way, the truth, and the life. Brian is an Assistant Regional Director overseeing the Grand Rapids and Pittsburgh chapters.

Rosemary Thornton
Executive Supervisor

Rosemary is a wife and mother of four girls.  She served as a UCO staffer for five years after college, and now works as a Physician Assistant in a local ER.  She is grateful for the continued opportunity to advance the Good News of God’s love in the university setting.  She also likes to hang out at beautiful beaches and work out at the gym. Rosemary is the Executive Supervisor who helps with the development of UCOs across the region, the senior staff in many chapters, and the broader growth of mission positions for women in UCO.

Nico Angleys
Executive Director

Nico grew up in France in the Alps and came to Ann Arbor in the 90s to study Aerospace at U of M. During that period, God seems to have taken a hold of his life in an unexpected way and Nico decided he’d leave rocket science for a more heavenly mission. He’s worked for UCO for 18 years in Ann Arbor, London, and Lansing. He is a member of the Servants of the Word. He is known to hide behind a camera and periodically bust a move or two in the kitchen. Nico is the Executive Director for UCO and is overall responsible for the development and growth of UCOs across North America. Nico oversees the senior UCO staff and helps with leadership development in the region.
